TREATMENT
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a powerful and effective approach for addressing life’s difficulties. Decades of research results are clear that group therapy has strong healing, change, and growth benefits. But what is group therapy? How exactly does group therapy work? What do people get out of it?
The Benefits of Group Therapy
Group therapy provides participants with a sense of belonging and reassurance that they are not the only ones dealing with difficulties. Participants benefit from the experiences, successes, failures, and efforts of each group member and often develop new perspectives on their own lives. Lastly, group therapy participation means you are facing challenges and getting to grow with a group of peers who want to see you succeed and are eager to support and cheer you on.
- Group therapy participation provides the following benefits:
- Providing a sense that you are not alone
- Getting to hear shared experiences among the group
- Different perspectives on how to solve a problem or address issues
- Group members may give answers or things to try that you haven’t yet thought of
- Feedback on how you interact with others
- Practicing skills you are learning or developing with group members
- Learning to respectfully listen to others
- Developing abilities to agree or disagree in ways that respect the dignity of others
- Being held accountable for your actions and choices by group members
- Sharing your feelings, fears, hopes, goals, and anything else, in a safe space
- Feeling support and encouragement from group members
